Connecting a Manifold

axon-thumb.jpg

The refinement of our object has proceeded along a line of geometric simplification to ease issues of fabrication (for us newbies) and to make the connections we were conceptualizing a bit easier. So for the midterm it looks like a glorified christmas ornament, but it was a necessary step to get down to the nuts and bolts of the project - that is layered voids that are encapsulated by several laminations that kiss and unfurl at certain points. Unfortunately we fell flat on our face when it came to the pin connection - it's just almost impossible to vacuum form something like that - ideally you'd want to cast it into a mold to achieve a level of stiffness that would allow the other forces on the edges to become actualized.

But fear thee not blog readers, if there are any, for we have abandoned the central pin puncturing a larger globe volume to one that sits on a ground - an accidental discovery as we only milled 1/4 of the fucker and thus had to sit it on a piece of plexi like some glorified helmet from lord of the rings (pictures to follow tonight or tomorrow). I myself didn't get to mill (drawing duty again), but that changes tonight as half the group is in Hawaii (yes i passed up going to do minimal surfaces, why!) and I and one partner are left here to steer the ship.
